A team of Serbian car factory workers have built a life-size ultrasauros dinosaur on Southsea Common.

It was once thought to be the largest dinosaur until its fossils were found to be from two different species.

Artists Heather and Ivan Morison have designed the model: “It has big square legs, big curves, it’s simplified, almost like a toy dinosaur.”

Named Luna Park, the fictional creature is 53ft (16m) tall, 72ft (22m) long and will be visible from the Isle of Wight.

Vast form

The large dark grey sculpture will serve as a focal point and shelter on Southsea Common throughout the summer.

“You can sit underneath it, there’s lighting at night and it’s so big that you’re in an open-sided room when you stand between its legs,” said artist Ivan.

“It’s based on brutalist architecture, so it has these big forms, big square legs and big curves on the top.” he added.

The artists based their design for Luna Park on ultrasauros, a fake dinosaur fabricated in the 1970′s by scientist, Professor Jim Jensen.

Serbia to Southsea

The professor put together the dinosaur from many different bones, then sold the story that it was the largest dinosaur that ever lived. He was found out several years later.

The vast sculpture has a steel skeleton and hard polyester shell. It has been transported in six pieces almost 2,000 miles by ship and lorry from Serbia to Southsea.

The dinosaur will stand on Southsea Common until 10 October.

A SQUEEZE on benefits is set to hit 32,000 people across Hampshire, Southampton and the Isle of Wight, the Daily Echo can reveal.

Yesterday the Government announced proposals to reform the UK’s benefits system, pledging the biggest overhaul in decades.

Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith set out a series of options aimed at helping people see the value of moving from benefits to work.

They included combining elements of the current income-related benefits and tax credit systems, bringing out-of-work and in-work support together in a single system, and supplementing monthly household earnings through credit payments reflecting circumstances such as children, housing and disability.

The process is due to begin next April.

But Southampton Test MP John Denham has warned if the Government rushes these tests, it could see people forced into work, who are not fit to be there.

He said: “The Government is trying to do this in a rush which will almost certainly see them bungle it and that will ruin people’s lives.”

A service station restaurant has been included in The Good Food Guide after a makeover by celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal.

The Little Chef, on the A303 in Popham, near Basingstoke, scored two out of 10 points in the industry guide, comparable to a good quality gastropub.

New dishes include braised ox cheeks and Hereford steak and Abbot ale pie.

Blumenthal, whose Michelin-starred Fat Duck restaurant in Bray, Berkshire, topped the guide, was “overjoyed”.

The menu also includes an “Olympic” breakfast of free-range eggs, outdoor-bred British pork sausages, Wiltshire-cured back bacon and Ramsay of Carluke black pudding.

‘Decent cooking’

Blumenthal filmed a Channel 4 TV series to try to revive the fortunes of the roadside chain in 2008.

The guide said the restaurant has “decent cooking, displaying good basic technical skills and interesting combinations and flavours. Occasional inconsistencies”.

Elizabeth Carter, editor of The Good Food Guide, said: “The minute I walked in I knew it belonged in The Guide.

“It was so welcoming, vibrant and had a real buzz. I’m confident other diners will think so too.”

Blumenthal’s Fat Duck scored a perfect 10 for the second year, beating Gordon Ramsay’s restaurant Chelsea.

He said: “I am overjoyed with this news.

“Inclusion in The Good Food Guide is a great barometer of success and it’s fantastic news for Little Chef Popham to be recognised by such an established British food guide.”

The Fat Duck was forced to close for more than two weeks in February after 400 diners complained of having fallen ill. Tests later revealed the norovirus was to blame.

Date: 19th August
3.00pm
02392 828 282

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gxdUj4-A-ZY

The brand new show – Touring theatres across the UK – The world’s greatest secret agent is back. “Ooh, ‘eck!”

This summer and autumn 2010 sees the return of the world’s number 1 secret agent.

He that is so secret even he doesn’t know who he is sometimes. Danger Mouse bursts onto stage in his first ever theatre show touring to venues across the UK. The whole team are back together from Colonel K, trusty sidekick Penfold to arch enemies Baron Silas Greenback, Nero, and Stiletto. There is even a special appearance from Agent 57 if you can spot him?

For those of you who DON’T know. Danger Mouse was born halfway up Mount Everest; an instant prodigy, he completed the climb to the top when he was only a few hours old. This multi talented super hero was educated at Eton, then Cambridge, Oxford, Harvard, the Sorbonne and Würtembery, picking up his B.A., B.Sc., M.A., M.Sc., and Ph.D. Danger Mouse knows several Martial Arts, and can speak virtually all known languages including several extraterrestrial ones. Danger Mouse is so secret even his code name has a code name!

This all-new family show charts Danger Mouse from his early years before he became the famous crime busting crusader right up to 2010. When the then retired secret agent – upholder of justice, lover of small puppies, helper of old
ladies across the road and all round nice guy who’d help anyone out of a jam or even marmalade come to that is called upon to save the world one more time. We even find out why he wears the trademark eye patch.

This nostalgic eighties character show is ideal for children from five to one hundred and five. So for those lovers of all things eighties or even white mice come along and bring your kids, your parents and even your granny or maybe someone else’s granny for what promises to be the greatest show of 2010.

Oh Crumbs!
